Infrared photography is literally seeing the world in a different light.  Because near- infrared light is beyond the visible spectrum, it has no color, only luminance.  False color infrared photographs have certain colors assigned to parts of the image to give it a natural appearance.
The two most noticeable characteristics of infrared images are dark skies which are due to the atmosphere not scattering infrared light, and the high infrared reflectance of chlorophyll.  As a result, clouds are more prominent and foliage takes on an enhanced luminance that makes both stand out.
